How to take control of this week

It’s the start of a new week and many of you may have specific goals and objectives that you would like to complete this week. However, life happens and we are usually hit with emergency meetings, stressors, and other obstacles that make it harder for us to accomplish what is needed. So what do we do when things get in the way? There are a few options: 1) find another way to get it done or 2) use said obstacle as a reason why we failed.

The main difference between the two outcomes is understanding what we can and can’t control. We have no say/role in other people’s schedules, nature, work, etc. But we can choose our response to uncertainty. We can decide to let life dictate every single move we make and wait for the wind to blow over, however, do things really get easier when we wait? Or we can choose to make a conscious decision to take action even when life is busy and hectic. So how can we make the most out of our weeks and take charge of it? Here are a few action steps to make that possible:

  1. Create a standing appointment for yourself. Block out at least 30 minutes to focus on meditation, reading, exercising, stretching, or anything that is going to be a positive influence on your wellbeing. Make sure that nothing interrupts this sacred time for yourself. Silence your phone and focus on those 30 minutes of ‘you’ time. Start off with 1 day per week and then increase the length of time or frequency as you feel the amazing effects of focusing on you.

  2. Limit alcohol intake. This is perfect timing as our Sober November challenge is around the corner. Regular consumption of booze can actually increase your stress and make it harder to manage everything that is coming your way when it comes to work, relationships and life. Try it out starting this Friday, 11/1 and see for yourself.

  3. Assume a power pose. This will truly affect how you feel as it can help release adrenaline and other amazing hormones to help you maximize your feeling of control. An easy way to do this is by putting your hands on your hips like you are posing as a superhero! Trust me, this works.

  4. Write out your priorities and share it with someone. Better yet, share them with us! You are more likely to accomplish your goals when doing this because of the accountability. You will take ownership of your actions and you will be even more motivated to get things done within your designated time frame.

  5. Work with a coach. Whether it be a financial, life, professional or even a fitness coach. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the conflicting information out there, a coach will filter all the information and identify the most actionable steps for you. Rather than wasting your time trying to spin your wheels, work with someone that has your goals in mind and will create a plan of action that you can take today. So when planning out your week today, take these 5 action steps and see what a difference it can make to your Monday and reevaluate how you feel on Friday. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
