It is the first Friday of the decade. What are your bright spots so far? If you’ve never heard of a bright spot, they are the small wins that happened over the past few days that help identify all the forward progress you’ve made.
Consider your fitness goals as swimming across a big lake. Let’s say a mile in diameter. You are standing on one end looking at the other beach asking yourself, “How am I going to make it across?” You take one step in the water, and then start swimming stroke after stroke. Your arms get tired and your lungs burn, only to see that the horizon barely moved. This can be quite discouraging, especially when you are exhausted and doubt that you can make it. However, after taking a quick look behind you, notice that you’ve already made it more than halfway to your destination. What do you do? You realize that if you just take it one stroke at a time, the goal is going to be accomplished pretty soon. Before you know it, you’ve reached the other end of the beach, feeling accomplished and maybe even a little tired.
When we take a look back and reflect on what we’ve done the past few days, we soon realize that we’re actually closer to success than we think. Consider each win as a little boost of motivation to help you take one more step.
It’s the beginning of the year and your motivation should be at an all time high. However, make sure that you continue to practice bright spots every week to keep you motivated to make positive changes. You got this.
