The spread of coronavirus (COVID 19) has sparked huge concerns in regards to public safety and health. The good news is that there haven’t been any confirmed cases in Hoboken/Jersey City, and local officials are taking action to prevent the spread of the virus. Hudson River Fitness is also taking part in making sure that the facility is safe and sanitary.
This week we’ll be talking all about boosting your immunity and decreasing your likelihood of getting sick, not just from Coronavirus but from other sources as well. Every day this week we’ll be providing action steps to help you become stronger, healthier, and more resistant to illness.
Today’s action step is all about prevention. This is the most powerful way to reduce the risk of getting sick and spreading it to others. It’s also the #1 thing that you have 100% control when it comes to staying healthy. Follow these steps to ensure that you are doing your part in preventing the spread of illness and to protect yourself:
Wash your hands with hot soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This may seem like a very basic rule, but take a moment and think about how much/little you wash your hands. Think about how often you’re putting your hands on commonly touched surfaces. Ensure that you practice cleaning your hands before you eat, after you use the bathroom, and when coming in contact with any vulnerable population (elderly, young children, and immunocompromised individuals)
If you don’t have access to soap and water, carry hand sanitizer with you. This will provide another option for protection especially when you’re in public places.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth without cleaning/santizing your hands.
Cover your mouth/nose when you sneeze/cough with your elbow crease r tissue. This will result in the bacteria/viruses (if you have them) to be more localized to your elbow crease, as compared to your hand where (if there is no access to cleaning products) the spread of germs can happen.
The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends the use of masks if: you’re healthy but working with patients suspected of having COVID 19; if your coughing/sneezing to prevent spreading it; practicing regular hand washing/cleaning. If you are using a face mask, ensure that you know how to properly dispose of it.
Avoid trying to “sweat” out an illness. Although the corona virus and other illnesses may not be transmitted via sweat; saliva (spit), coughing, and unsanitized contact may result in the spread of sickness.
If you’re not feeling well, don’t risk spreading it to other healthy folks by trying to stick it out. Not only will this be stressful on your immune system, which make you more sick, but it puts others at risk of getting ill too. Stay home
If you’re having a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, notify your healthcare professional immediately. They’ll be able to direct you to the right plan of action.
All of the immune boosting action steps after today will not be as strong if you don’t take the necessary precautions to reduce your exposure and prevent the spread of illness. So take these action steps today and everyday, and you’ll be able to increase your resiliency and lower the likelihood of contracting an illness.
You, your family, your friends, and everyone else around you deserve to be safe and healthy.
