How to manage flare ups

Flare ups will happen.

Why this matters:

Accepting the fact that you will have an occasional flare up in pain, will help you overcome these episodes even faster. Why do flare ups happen? For most, pain does not always indicate true damage of tissues. The pain you experience is very real. What you’re experiencing is an alarm reaction to a specific or accumulation of activities/positions. This will pass. The following steps will help you overcome the flare up with confidence.

Action steps:

First, identify the triggers. Did you sit for too long? Did you start a new exercise program? Make a list of the things that you did different. Let’s explore how we can change that.

Second, take a deep breath. With this flare up, you’re probably holding your breath. Breathe in for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds.

Third, focus on the stretches and exercises that you know make you feel better. Maybe do a little more of them today and more often.

Flare ups happen. It gives us an opportunity to go back to the drawing board so that these will happen less often and less intensely.
