Change how you move.
Why this matters:
The phrase “movement is medicine” is a very powerful phrase and should be adopted for everyone. However, when you’re in pain and movement is in fact painful, what do we do? The key is to understand that yes, it is important to stay mobile. But, we have to look inside and ask ourselves “what about this movement is causing me pain?” From there, we are able to figure out how to move and get active without flaring up our sciatica.
Action steps:
Which movements cause you pain? Is it that your back is moving too much (rounded or arched)? Are you twisting too much during that activity? How can we do the same activity without causing pain?
You can technically avoid these painful motions, but we run the risk of creating some fear avoidance, which can prolong your recovery.
If you can’t answer the questions above, simply record yourself doing the activity and break it down frame by frame. The good news is that you don’t have to do that by yourself.
