Why is there a correlation between chronic back pain and inadequate levels of Vitamin D? 

To start, Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and regulates the amount of phosphate in the body. Without enough calcium, your bones can weaken which can potentially lead to bone, joint or musculoskeletal pain. Inadequate levels of Vitamin D can also cause Osteomalacia which can be characterized as a dull aching pain. You may feel it more in the morning and it can sometimes be confused with a muscle ache. This is a common deficiency, but you are at higher risk if you have dark skin, are elderly or overweight, or are constantly wearing sunscreen when you do see the light of day. 

So what can you do about it? Make sure you’re incorporating fatty fish into your diet like salmon or cod. Egg yolk, red meat, liver, and mushrooms are also all great sources. If you’re trying to avoid any of those things, there are foods that come fortified with Vitamin D like orange juice, dairy, or even some cereals. But the best natural source of Vitamin D is sunlight. You won’t notice an immediate effect of Vitamin D since it’s a fat-soluble vitamin. It needs time to build up in your body and unfortunately, fruits, vegetables, and grains contain almost no Vitamin D.
